Design Bookkeeping describes a metaphor and approach for documenting materials-led or craft practices.
We illustrated the concept in the form of a pictorial, which was published and won the best paper award distinction at the conference on Designing Interactive Systems in 2024. It pulls from emerging discussions in the Human-Computer Interaction community to suggest forms of documentation that encourage sharing smaller, provisional bits of “know-how” (the little hacks and techniques we develop to make new work possible) that can be translated across projects. We illustrate the concept by drawing from the many forms of documentation and sharing that emerged between experimental weaver in residence Elizabeth Meiklejohn, Irene Posch, and Laura Devendorf during the 2023 Experimental Weaving Residency.
